What eHarmony Say About Themselves
eHarmony UK is Different. eHarmony is more than just another online dating site.
The eHarmony Compatibility Matching System™ measures your compatibility with our singles to match you with men/women with whom you share deep levels of compatibility.
Where other sites make you search through pictures and paragraphs, eHarmony matches you based on your compatibility in the most important areas of life – such as character, intellect, sense of humour, spirituality, values, beliefs, passion, and other key dimensions.
eHarmony - Ease Of Use
This site is certainly easy to use, there is next to no functionality available to the user to use. Most of the matching and searching is done by the eHarmony matching system.
Matches found are automatically entered into your account for you to view a few each day.
The automated guided contact is simple to use also, I'll go into this a bit deeper in the appropriate spot later in this review.
eHarmony Signup Procedure
The sign up process is very long winded; you may save progress though and return at a later time to complete.
Once you have entered your email address and chosen your password, you then get onto filling out their questionnaire, if you don’t like long forms to fill in this site won’t be for you.
Unless you complete the form the site cannot match you with other matches.
The forms themselves are the usual psych profiling forms you find at job interviews though are more relationship based. (I never realised there were so many ways to ask the same question)
It should take you between 20 minutes and half an hour to complete, depending on how much you think about your answers. (HINT: Think about them carefully)
eHarmony Photo Information
You can upload Photos in the usual way digitally from your computer using the browse button to locate it in your files.
You can post Photos into eHarmony for inclusion in your profile, if you would like the photo back you will need to include a stamped addressed envelope or the photo gets shredded after 60 days.
Details and the address to send them to can be found in their help pages, link at the foot of eHarmony's page.
eHarmony Member Levels
Just two member levels on eHarmony, Paid and unpaid!
Unpaid members can fill out their profiles and complete the Questionnaire, upload photos, view the profiles of members eHarmony has matched you with (but cannot view their photos)
Paid members can do everything an unpaid member can do as well as viewing the photos of matches, and initiating contact.
I will describe what’s involved in the contact in the Messaging section of this review.
eHarmony Search Tools
Well this is the easiest search review we have ever done.
None. eHarmony doesn’t have a search feature at all, the user cannot browse or search other members. The only members the user gets to see are the ones eHarmony consider to be matches according to the psychological profiling.
eHarmony Messaging System
Messaging, True to form eHarmony has done this differently as well.
There is no video/audio communication at all.
eHarmony have a method called "Guided Communication"
How this works:
1st Stage - Read the profile of your match.
2nd Stage - Choose five multiple choice questions to send to your match...and wait for the answers... The questions are similar in structure to the psychological profiling questions. They probably add another level of profiling to their system.
3rd Stage - you exchange 10 "Must Have's" and 10 "Can't Stand's"
4th Stage - You send two open ended questions, this is the first stage where the other person actually has to create an answer rather than selecting one from choices given. Though eHarmony does provide ready built questions for the fourth stage you are also able to create your own questions instead.
5th Stage - Open communication, here for the first time you get to exchange emails through the eHarmony system.
If at any stage you don't like the match you have been communicating with, or would for any reason like to bring it to an end, you may close the match.
Be sure this is what you want to do, there is no way to re-open a match once you have closed it. Don't close it in haste, over a little tiff or that match is gone for ever.
There are some occasions where the other person may ask for communication to be resumed, ie if you stated the reason for closing the match was because they didn't have a photo, once the match has uploaded a photo, they will get the chance to ask you to resume communication.
Extras offered by eHarmony
Extras isn’t an easy one to review, some sites offer psych profiles as an extra service on eHarmony, it is fundamental to the way the site works so cannot be considered an extra.
We have to conclude that eHarmony does not offer any extras.

eHarmony: Additional Information
Harris Interactive / eHarmony Study Finds an Average of 236 eHarmony Members Marry Every Day
PASADENA, Calif., July 28, 2008—New research conducted by Harris Interactive finds that, on average, 236 eHarmony members marry every day in the United States as a result of being matched on eHarmony. This number represents a 162 percent increase in “I do’s” since 2005, when Harris Interactive conducted a similar phone poll that found an average of 90 eHarmony members married every day. Based on the research, eHarmony marriages accounted for 2 percent of new U.S. marriages during the study period, up from 0.79 percent of marriages in 2005.
“Many eHarmony members find long-term, satisfying relationships that lead to marriage,” said Greg Waldorf, CEO of eHarmony. “These results from a credible market research company like Harris Interactive validate and distinguish our scientific approach and compatibility matching models.”
“We were pleased to work with eHarmony and utilize our Internet research expertise to help them better understand their members’ behaviour,” said Dan Hucko, senior vice president of corporate communications at Harris Interactive.
eHarmony’s scientific approach and emphasis on helping people find compatible long-term partners makes it different from other online dating services. In addition to its ongoing research in the United States, the company has also conducted extensive marriage research in international markets in order to tailor its compatibility models.
“eHarmony was the first online relationship service to use relationship science to develop its compatibility matching models,” noted Dr. Galen Buckwalter, chief scientist of eHarmony. “We are committed to investigating and understanding what makes marriages successful through further rigorous scientific research.”
The Harris Interactive/eHarmony study was conducted through a nationwide online survey using a representative sample of 7,135 Americans aged 20-54 who were married between April 1, 2006 and March 31, 2007. Data were weighted to be representative of recently married U.S. residents within that age range. Respondents were about equally divided between men (49 percent) and women (51 percent). U.S. Census Bureau data were used to extrapolate the number of couples nationwide who married after being matched by eHarmony. The overall margin of error is 0.51 percent.

What we found on eHarmony
This is the most expensive dating site we have reviewed to date; we are also not convinced this will work for the majority of people.
We fear that because users only get the chance to communicate with those that eHarmony say are compatible, those matches will be "safe" matches. We feel that you will find someone you get along with (at least 'on paper'), and you may be compatible, and this may be enough so that you fall in love and get married.
We feel that eHarmony will have a greater success rate than other dating sites, and introduce members who many stay together long enough to get married, but as they are only introducing safe matches to each other this would be a foregone conclusion.
What potential members need to take into account is: do they want a middle of the road relationship? Most relationships that are built on compatibility end because one or the other partner ends up straying for excitement. How about partners that fall into the "Soul Mate" status. Would you get matched to those on a psych test, many of the happiest couples are so different as to be opposites completely, and would therefore not match on 'paper'.
I know that I would never get along with someone that shared the same personality traits as me. I need someone different to me so that, together, we become a whole new character.
There are also those things that someone thinks is a non-negotiable issue, like having (or not wanting) children. Smoking is a topical one at the moment. I have always stated in my profile that I would be looking for a non smoker. However, I found that having met someone who smokes (whom I would not have been matched with on 'paper') that it no longer seemed important. On'paper', I would never have been matched with this amazing woman. When I filled in my profile I meant it. I did not want to meet someone who smoked, and if asked how important that was I would have answered extremely. On eHarmony I would never have met my wife, as she smoked heavily and having recently given up myself, I didn’t want to meet anybody who smoked. We are very happy and the smoking isn’t an issue.
If you are new to the dating scene, this is a good way to get your feet wet, test the water. If you want a safe stable relationship again, I think this would be a good site.
If you are looking for your Prince Charming, or a relationship that sweeps you off your feet, makes you float on cloud 9, the ever elusive soul mate, I wouldn’t recommend this site, as in relationships of that quality individuals very rarely match on paper.
eHarmony do ask a huge amount of questions - to be able to create your psychological profile, it really makes you think about what you are looking for and about your values and beliefs. Take this into consideration when deciding if eHarmony may be the site to help you find your partner.

How eHarmony Scored Out Of A Possible 100
eHarmony has reached a score of 55 points.
Though eHarmony is already of reasonable quality eHarmony is not yet a top quality dating site. We will continue to monitor the progress of eHarmony and up date this review as changes are made.
